FAQs
Frequently asked questions
fleet
- Do you work on vans and fleets?
- A good part of our work is courier and logistics vans. Fleet accounts get priority in the diary and agreed rates — a van off the road isn't earning.
prices
- Do you show your prices?
- Yes. MOT is £50 flat. Servicing is worked out for your specific vehicle — enter your registration and you'll see the labour and every part, itemised, before you book. Recovery is priced by the mile with both legs shown separately.
- Why does a service cost different amounts for different cars?
- Because the parts differ. A 1.0 petrol takes around 3.5 litres of oil; a 2.0 diesel van takes closer to 6.5, and the filters aren't the same price either. We price the parts your engine actually needs rather than charging everyone an average.
- Is there VAT on top?
- No. RMG Motors is not VAT registered, so the price you see is the price you pay.
recovery
- How is recovery priced?
- A £100 call-out fee covers the truck, the driver and the first 5 miles. After that it is £4.00 a mile for the miles your vehicle spends on the truck — the run out to you is on us. Recovery after 8pm carries a 20% out-of-hours call-out. The Recovery Meter shows all of it before you commit to anything.
- Do you answer the phone at night?
- For recovery, yes — that's the point of a recovery service. Workshop bookings are handled during opening hours, but the website takes them any time.
- Do you recover outside Exeter?
- Yes, but past about 20 miles from the workshop we quote it on the phone instead of online. A long run out of our patch depends on the route and the time, and we would rather give you a real number than a formula's guess.
remapping
- Do I have to tell my insurer?
- Yes. A remap is a modification, and not declaring it can invalidate your policy. Most insurers take it on the phone in a couple of minutes.
- Is remapping legal?
- Remapping itself is legal, as long as the car still meets the emissions standard it was type-approved to. Removing emissions equipment — a DPF or an EGR — is not, and we only do that on vehicles used exclusively off-road or in motorsport.
- How much will my car actually gain?
- It depends on the engine, and anyone who quotes you an exact figure off a registration is guessing. The estimator on this page gives the typical range for your engine class; the real numbers come off your car's own file, and we show you them before anything is written.
- Will it use more fuel?
- Driven the same way, usually a little less, because there's more torque low down and you change gear less. Driven with your foot down to enjoy it, more. It's your right foot either way.
- How long does it take?
- Allow a couple of hours through the diagnostic port and most of a day if the ECU has to come out for a bench read.
servicing
- Will servicing here affect my manufacturer warranty?
- No. Under EU/UK Block Exemption rules you can have a car under warranty serviced by any garage, as long as the manufacturer's schedule is followed and parts of matching quality are used. That's what we do, and we stamp and record the service so your history stays intact.
